Give Oprah A Break

I was just listening to a segment on CNN's Showbiz Tonight about the controversy surrounding Oprah and the school she just opened.

One man said that she is hypocritical because of the recent statement she made. When Oprah said that kids in this country only want things and that kids in Africa only want to go to school, she is right. But what this guy said was that she is a hypocrite because of all of the things she gives away on her show and all of the things she promotes.

You have to understand, she is not giving these things to kids. She is giving things to adults who work for what they have, have gone to school and already have an education (hopefully, though we will never know.) There is a big difference here. I remember the episode of "The Cobsy Show" where Vanessa was talking to Cliff about how her friends were being mean to her because she was rich. The Cos corrected her by saying that "she" wasn't rich, her parents were. She had nothing because she didn't have a job yet and because she didn't have an education yet. I wish kids could learn this.

Brenham asked me one night when "we" were getting paid, to which I replied, "WE weren't getting paid, Dad was." Kids need to learn that the things their parents work for are not theirs. It all belongs to their parents. Until they learn that, they will continue to feel entitled to whatever they want whenever they want it. Oprah is right for putting the money where it will be appreciated. Who cares if there is a spa included?
